WORKSHOP ON MUSHROOM CULTIVATION
(27-28-November-2014)
Two days workshop on Mushroom cultivation was organised by Department of Botany. First day, wheat straw was moistened on floor to make it soft for the penetration of fungal hyphae. Second day, extra water was drained from wheat straw and moist wheat straw was filled in Polythene bags tightly in the form of layers alternating with the layers of spawn. To avoid wastage spawn is spread on the periphery in its layers. Polythene bags are tied tightly with rubber bands. Holes are made at random in the polythene bags for aeration. Lower two corners of the polythene are cut for draining extra water. The bags are kept at warm dark place because these conditions are favourable for the growth of the fungus. The fungal hyphae penetrate cellulose of wheat straw which gives Cottony appearance in about 15 days. Then polythene bag was cut and removed. Wheat straw packet was watered regularly for 13 to 20 days till the appearance of first crop of mushrooms. They are harvested and after few days the next crop appears. In this way with little effort and cheap raw material highly valuable, protein rich mushrooms were cultivated.
